Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Cutlia processes your video directly in your browser using WebAssembly and your device's hardware. The file never leaves your computer or phone, so it stays completely private.
Which languages are supported?
100 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Hindi and Japanese — all of them are listed on this page. The language is detected automatically — if the start is hard to tell, you're asked, and you can change it anytime. Accuracy is best in the most widely spoken languages. Serbian, Bosnian and Uzbek captions can be in Cyrillic or Latin, Chinese in Simplified or Traditional characters.
Can I download just the subtitle file?
Yes. Download the captions as an SRT or VTT file (or a plain-text transcript) without rendering the video, or burn them permanently into the picture.
Can I add English subtitles to a video in another language?
Yes. Once the captions are made, click “Translate to English”: English captions are made from the speech, on your device, and you can switch between them and the original anytime. Burn either into the video, or download a subtitle file of each — YouTube takes several languages.
Why does the first run take longer?
The first time, your browser downloads what it needs for speech recognition and saves it. After that, captions start in seconds — even for your next video.
Can I finish my captions later?
Yes. As you work, your captions — with their style, timing and your fixes, and the English version if you made one — are saved in this browser, never uploaded (the video itself isn't kept). Pick the same video file again and the editor opens where you left off, without transcribing again. The latest 30 videos are kept, and you can delete any of them from the list under the drop zone.
Is it really free?
Yes. Cutlia is free to use with no account, no trial and no watermark on your export. The site is paid for by the ads on it, and your files never leave your device.
