How to make a video background transparent

  1. 01

    Open your video

A video of a person, or one filmed against a green or blue screen.

  2. 02

    Leave the background out

Everything but the people (or the screen) becomes see-through — shown over a checkerboard.

  3. 03

    Download the WebM

Use it as an overlay in OBS, on a web page, or in an editor that reads WebM transparency.

Why use Cutlia for this

Real transparency

The video keeps an alpha channel (VP9 in WebM): everything around the person is see-through, the edges soft where they should be.

Ready for overlays

Drop it into OBS as a media source, over a page with a video tag, or into an editor that supports WebM transparency.

Green when you need it

If your editor can't read transparent WebM, export with a green screen behind instead — every editor can key that.

Frequently asked questions

Which apps show the background as transparent?

Chrome and Edge in web pages, OBS Studio, and editors that read WebM transparency. If yours doesn't, export with a green screen and key it out there.

Why WebM and not MP4?

MP4 videos (H.264) can't store transparency. WebM with VP9 can, and plays in browsers without any plug-in.

Why isn't “None” offered in my browser?

Making a transparent WebM needs a VP9 encoder in the browser. Where there isn't one, choose a green or blue screen instead.

Is it really free?

Yes. Cutlia is free to use with no account, no trial and no watermark on your export. The site is paid for by the ads on it, and your files never leave your device.
